Raising awareness
I’ve joined a group of mums to answer a Monday question.
Today’s question is, “Have you worked in any way in your town, city, community or school so that people know more about Down’s syndrome and, above all, know Coraline?”
When we were out and about on public transport before March this year, we used to have a lot of great, smiling, conversations with people on buses, at bus stops, in supermarkets and on trains! We’d also go to lots of baby and toddler groups.
I write my blog and have had articles featured in the local newspaper and local magazines, and nationally in @primamag last Christmas 2019, as well as on other websites. In fact I can’t resist posting a couple of photos from the Prima photoshoot (thank you @nickyjohnston).
Coraline’s preschool has asked the children to wear odd socks for World Down Syndrome Day each of the two years she’s been there. Last year they emailed one of my blog posts to all the parents.
Kevin and I have our own handmade organic soap business @coraleenskincare. Kevin makes the soap. Due to some local marketing and local online Christmas fairs we feel households in our area know about us and Coraline. Someone even stopped me and Coraline in the street this weekend on a local walk who’d bought our soap and said, “are you Liz and Coraline?” She’d recognised us from Coraline’s photo which goes in with each bar of soap (scroll to see the current pic. we pop in with the soap, we change it every few months).
I do some volunteering for @homestartsutton and at a local community fundraising event one evening in February 2020 I spoke about my volunteering experience with them and told our story about us and Coraline. There were about 200 people there.
I used to work with lots of teachers and one of them invited us to give a talk in her school but we haven’t yet. We must take her up on it!
